I decided that every week I'll post some links that have been found useful in our research. Most of these are used to find new places to investigate, while others are used for research.
Find a grave is very useful. You can find cemeteries close to you that you want to investigate, see who is in it, and see pictures of the cemetery and headstones. This all varies depending on how much people update it, but the information can be very useful. Some of the entries have pictures of the people while they were alive, and will sometimes have their obituary entry. Some cemeteries are older and headstones are hard to read, and Find a Grave will have the epitaphs written online, and can be very accurate.
I put our county website up, but any county website can be very useful. You might hear rumors or stories about places that are haunted, and these websites can provide history and insight that may prove or disprove those stories. For example, the story of Tuckers Cemetery here is that "old man Tucker" killed his family and burned them in the basement there. If you look at the county website, you can find pictures of a Tucker School. This helped to disprove the rumor. There is a basement and a foundation next to the cemetery, but it was possibly the school, not "old man Tucker's" house. This helps to show how useful a county website is. Another good source would be your local historical society.
I'm going to end this post with two cool things. First off, I just mentioned Tucker's Cemetery, and here's a cool video I found on YouTube of an author going to the cemetery for a book he was writing. The link to the video is right here.
The author, Wesley Treat, has a cool junk shop photo blog here. He uses these photos to update Find a Grave when necessary.
And here's another picture. This was taken about a 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. It's of me, Danielle, at Weavers Cemetery. In the lower left hand corner you can see a face.
That face is so epic!
ReplyDeleteIt's very creepy. And clearly a face!
